RAR 241 Sutton Stop to Ash Green

header artwork

This month we are going to repeat Real Ale Ramble No 5, from way back in 1995. We meet at the GREYHOUND at 12:00 noon; a number of buses pass along Bedworth Road and maybe even the Coventry Stadium Station will be open by then.

There are a few reasons for repeating this walk

  • A Back in 1995 we did it wrong. We crossed Phoenix Way on the level, which is not a safe thing to do! I have since found out that the footpath passes under the road alongside the River Sowe.
  • There are three pubs on this walk that are rarely visited. Even if we do not have a high opinion of them, if we do not visit we can hardly talk with authority about them.
  • Some parts of these paths are neglected and overgrown, or at least were before I came along with my secateurs! I guess that the authorities no longer have the funds to maintain them, so unless people such as us use them they will become impassable.
  • Since the industrial estate alongside Phoenix Way was built I have been unable to work out the route of the footpath it has covered. Thanks to the help of a local in October I now know the correct route.

At 12.30pm we set off along the canal as far as Longford, where we can take the Bedworth Road to Longford Square. Here we come to the COACH & HORSES at 12:45pm. This advertises 'Under New Management'. It also used to advertise Hobgoblin, so we shall see.

Then at 1:15pm we walk along Lady Lane, past the imposing Longford Barptist Church, then over the canal by footbridge. We walk along Woodshires Road, past the site of the old Longford station, to meet Rowleys Green Road. Just to the left of the junction there is an access road, which leads to a footpath. This path crosses fields to the rear of the housing on Wilsons Lane. The path then meets Phoenix Way and follows it south. This is the most overgrown section of the walk, although it should be all right since I took my secateurs to it. It takes us to the underbridge for both the path and River Sowe. On the other side the path follows the river upstream to St Giles church at Exhall. We cross Church Road and then more fields, over a tributary of the Sowe, to the ROYAL OAK at Ash Green for 2:15pm. This also has advertised Hobgoblin in the past.

At 2:35pm we follow Ash Green Road to the BULL & ANCHOR for 3:00pm. We can leave at 3:30pm and cross the road to enter a farm track. This takes us back to Phoenix Way, which we follow north to return to the river bridge. Then we follow the river south to the industrial estate. Around this we return to Woodshires Road and the canal, which we follow back to the GREYHOUND for 4:30pm.
