RAR 239 Birmingham's Balti Triangle & Chinatown

header artwork

Please note that this is a change from the previously advertised timetable. The Pershore Plum Festival has been moved from the date it occupied last year, so we will go and sample the cuisines of Birmingham instead. We meet at Coventry station at 11.15 and catch the 11.30 train which arrives at New Street, sorry, Grand Central, at 12.01. The we walk over to Moor Street to catch the No 50 bus towards Druids Heath, which runs every 4/5 minutes.

We get off at Trafalgar Road bus stop, which is just before the ' Welcome to Moseley ' sign. Opposite the stop is Edgabaston Road East, and off this on the right is Tindal Street. Here we find the OLD MOSELEY ARMS, which is the current CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year, and has a superb tandoori menu according to the GBG. It looks authentic enough as the licensee is S. S. Rai and it has an appropriately tatty look from the outside ! It sells Enville Ale, Wye Valley IPA, Butty Bach and guests. If there is any problem getting a tandoori I am sure we will be fine at one of the restaurants on Moseley Road.

From here we walk back into Birmingham, turning left and right alternately through the back streets until we cross the River Rea on Gooch Street and then turn right into Barford Street to arrive at that old favourite, the LAMP.

From the Lamp we continue into town to the FOX, another old favourite, and the DRAGON, a new Wetherspoons pub, both opposite the Back to Backs in Chinatown. Here we can indulge in our second ethnic meal of the day, if anyone has the appetite !

From here it is probably best to continue on to the POST OFFICE VAULTS before catching a train home from New Street.....sorry, Grand Central !
