RAR 232 Northampton

This month we have a stroll round the lovely county town of Northampton. The shopping is very good here as well as the drinking! We meet at Coventry station at 11:00am and catch the 11:21am whch arrives in Northampton at 11:55am. With any luck the new station will be open by then so we can walk through the new foyer to the main road.

We take the main road round to Bridge Street and then over the river Nene to Coten End where we ome to the first pub 1 POMFRET ARMS, a newly renovated little pub selling local ales.

From the Pomfret we retrace our steps over the river to 2 MALT SHOVEL, GBG listed for selling Elgoods, Hook Norton, Nobbys, Oakham and Phipps beers.

Then a short distance along Bridge Street, across St Peters Way, we come to 3 PHIPPS BREWERY. This has a bar, which supposedly has been open all week since the new year, so we shall see.

From here we go right into Angel Street, then left along Guildhall Road, passing the shoe museum, to St Giles Street for the WIG AND PEN, GBG listed, with Adnams, Elgoods, Fullers, Greene King plus guests.

Then we follow St Giles Street. Here we find St Giles Cheese Shop, which will no doubt cause me to divert for a few minutes. Like all good cheese shops it sells local bottled beers as well as a range of cheeses. We continue past St Giles church as far as Alexander Street. At the far end stands 5 PRINCESS ALEXANDRA, a street corner pub recently modernised. It sells a range of real ales plus a bigger range of bottled beers and cold foods.

After the Alex a passageway takes us to Kettering Road and a brisk walk brings us to the edge of the Racecourse Park. Here stands 6 OLDE ENGLAND. Quite an experience this one, as it is just a terraced property, with the pub on three levels. There is a downstairs lounge, with 'old gits corner ' ( I shall be there ! ), the bar and kitchen on the first floor, then a second floor lounge. Its a sort of vertical micro pub. I love the place !

Out of here we go left and back towards town through the back streets. this takes us to 7 LAMPLIGHTERS, GBG, with Phipps, Vale and guests.

Next we continue towards town, along Wellington Road to The Riddings for 8 CORDWAINER, a Wetherspoons. I guess it may have been an old shoe factory. Its pretty typical really, yet it is in the GBG.

And so to the Market Square for the last pub 9 MOON IN THE SQUARE, again, as you may guess from the name, a Wetherspoons. This time it is a long, narrow, pub, with strangely steep stairs, but it is handy for the station.

Then it is back to the station for the return trains, which leave at frequent intevals as above.
