HW 38 Sherbourne Valley Allesley

header artwork

This time we meet at the TOLLGATE on the Hollyhead Road at 12 noon. At 12:30pm we set off by walking along the Holyhead Road towards the city centre. We pass the layby alongside the Sherbourne, which was originally created for steam lorries from Coventry Flour Mill to take up water from the river.

We enter the water meadows on our left and follow the river upstream. Past the pond we take the bridge under Coundon Wedge Drive. Then through successive fields we pass a little brick field bridge before turning south and climbing up to Church Walk. Then we follow Butt Lane, with the river on our right. We cross Browns Lane and follow a lane northwards. As we pass The Stonehouse, which appears to have been renamed, the Shirebourne approaches the road and then diverges again. We are now so far upstream that the river is little more than a ditch and may have dried up by the time we are there !

We continue past Sherbourne Fields Farm to Swan's, animal feeds merchants. Here we take to the fields again and cross a tributary stream and then the Sherbourne itself. Both are just ditches now, as we are only one and a half miles from the point where the Sherbourne rises, which we visited in July. We turn left at a farm and walk fields with the river on our left now. Here, on my survey, I stood entranced as a pair of hawks, kestrels I think, giving a display of their aerial abilitites. We leave the fields at Pikers Lane Farm and turn right, then right again at Wall Hill Road and reach the WHITE LION at about 2:00pm.

At 2:30pm we leave and return along the familiar paths of Coundon Wedge, back to Church Walk and then along Coundon Wedge Drive to return to the TOLLGATE for 3:00pm.
