HW 36 The Source of the River Sherbourne

header artwork

Again, not the first Sunday of the month, but this time I have a family wedding to attend!

Last year we traversed the Sowe Valley Walk, so this year I thought we would do the Sherbourne Valley Walk. The only problem is that, officially, there isn't a Sherbourne Valley Walk, so I shall just have to make it up myself! So, we start with the wild and windswept watershed of Corley Moor, where the Sherbourne rises. All of us have landscapes that we consider special, and the area around Corley Moor is one of my special ones in Warwickshire. When we surveyed this walk we found it great country for wildlife: we saw a heron, buzzards, a hare, a basking pheasant, rabbits, peacock butterflies and plenty of wild flowers. This is a proper field walk, so the distances may seem longer, what with stiles to cross, valley sides to climb, uneven surfaces and views of the upper Sherbourne valley to take in. You will need a certain level of fitness !

We meet at the HORSE AND JOCKEY on Tamworth Road at 12 noon and leave at 12:30pm. They advertise Sunday lunch for £ 7.95. On the opposite side of the road stands Fern Cottage and Fern House. Between the two the footpath starts that passes Fern Cottage Farm, crosses fields and then passes Dadleys Wood. Dadleys Wood is a good spot to see buzzards. We pass Marslands Farm and walk through more fields to emerge onto Wall Hill Lane. Turning right we follow the lane to Corley Moor. We pass Slash Pitts Farm, with its pond that can claim to be one of the sources of the Sherbourne.

At 1:15pm we should arrive at the BULL AND BUTCHER for refreshments. At 1:45pm we set off along Watery Lane. The stream alongside this lane could also be a claimant as the source of the Sherbourne. Just before Elkin Wood we take a path on the left into a field. Here is the pond that I regard as the true source of the Sherbourne as from here it is a properly well-defined watercourse. Here we saw a heron. From the pond we follow the path round Tutbury Castle Farm to Bridle Brook Lane. After the farm the path becomes uneven, so you will have to walk carefully and watch where you put your feet. On this stretch I came across a pheasant basking in the sunshine. At Bridle Brook Lane we go right and recross the Sherbourne. Here we saw a hare.

Then left into Pikers Lane we cross the river for the last time. On the left just after the river we cross fields back to Wall Hill Lane. Across the lane we enter more fields, where there were plenty of rabbits, and we follow Dadleys Wood on our right to rejoin our original path back to the HORSE AND JOCKEY for 3:00pm
