HW 33 Lakeview Park and Hearsall Common

header artwork
This time we meet at the Nursery Tavern in Lord Street, Chapelfields, at 12:00 noon. We will need to confirm the numbers for lunch before we set off as the Nursery is a very small pub.

At 12:30pm we set off and cross Allesley Old Road and Four Pounds Avenue to Lakeview Park. We keep to the south of the raging River Sherbourne as far as the bridge, where we cross to the other bank.

We leave the park at the shiops on Holyhead Road. At the lights we turn left and follow the road to the New Spires, which we should reach after 30 minutes walking.

After half an hour we set off again and re-cross the Allesley Old Road. Now we take the Guphill, alongside the Co-op store. As you pass the Co-op note that it was built as a church - it still has a little bell tower!

The Guphill is the original lane in this area. When the housing was developed Glendower Avenue was laid out to the west of Guphill and Guphill was retained as rear access to the houses. Becuase the Guphill was a ' white road ' it still retains its status as a public bridleway an there are ' bridleway ' signs at either end.

I wonder, is this the only public bridleway within the city, and when was the last time a horse passed this way? At the end of the Guphill we turn left into the wooded section of Hearsall Common. We take the path past the little frog pond, then pass the cycle track and return to Chapelfields and the Nursery for about 2:00pm.
