HW 32 Coventry Canal

This month we start and finish at the SIGNAL BOX, a new Hungry Horse pub on the Stoney Stanton Road, near Gallagher Retail Park and opposite the site of the old Navigation Inn.

We meet at 12:00 noon and at 12:30pm set off along the towpath towards the city. We pass under the Red Lane bridges, then we pass Stoke basin.

Rounding the old Ordnance factory we go under Stoney Stanton Road. Then we round the old Websters Brickworks site and go under Foleshill Road. Now we go through the old Courtaulds site and pass Cash's topshops.

We pass the new bridge and new development at Bishopsgate before leaving the canal at the Drapers Field bridge. Across the Ring Road and down Bishop Street brings us to the STAG at about 1:30pm.

Leaving here at 2:00pm we walk back up Bishop Street to enter the canal basin. It is good to see that the basin is being used as a base by Valley narrowboats. From the basin we follow the new footpath on the left bank through the Bishopgate development.

This is an attractive walk as far as the new footbridge, where we have to cross the canal to rejoin the old towpath. We can follow this as far as the Foleshill Road, where we leave the canal and take Foleshill Road, Broad Street and Stoney Stanton Road back to the SIGNAL BOX as a short cut.

It also gives us the opportunity to visit the ethnic shops for spices, pickles or tinned curries. Or we can return along the canal the way we came, which would make the total distance more like 6 miles than 5.
