HW 31 Valley of the Hall Brook

header artwork

photoKeresley parish lies on the north-west fringe of Coventry. It is a parish of two parts, a built-up area comprising the village of Keresley and a rural area of Green Belt countryside comprising the Hall Brook valley and the hills surrounding. The network of rural public footpaths in the parish of Keresley, together with Allesley parish and the Coundon Wedge, is a legacy of the past which can be enjoyed today. It provides a major recreational resource and an opportunity to enjoy these historic landscape areas in the north-west part of the City.

This is a ramble we last visited in 1998, although very little has changed. We assemble at the Hare & Hounds on Watery Lane, Keresley, which has a good reputation for beers and food. When I was there last it as advertising a two course Sunday lunch for £ 9.99.

At 12:30pm we set off along Fivefield Road. When we get to the last of the row of semis on the left a sign points along a path and into a field. Turn right and follow the hedge, then through a gate and down to the bottom of the valley. At the bottom turn right again and pass through a gap in the next hedge. Two more gates lead you out onto Fivefield Road again. Follow the road up Hall Gill to reach the Horse & Jockey after less than an hours walking.

After refreshments return along Fivefield Road down Hall Hill. At the bottom you come to the start of Thompsons Lane, which was a white road when I was a youngster; now it is quite overgrown. On the right is a gate which leads to a field path.

Walk up Hounds Hill with Thompsons Lane on your left, then the path cuts a corner on the right and reaches the edge of Bunsons Wood. Follow the wood's edge until you reach a gate on your left. Go through it and turn right to follow the hedgerow to the next gate: this could be quite overgrown. Then through the next field you come to two cottages, no's 44 and 46 Fivefield Road, which are actually on a short access track.

From here it is a short distance back to the Hare & Hounds where those of us making a day of it can have a Sunday Lunch.
