HW 30 Baginton Oak to Stoneleigh Village Club

header artwork link to map link to previous ramble link to next ramble link to map key go to top of page
This is a walk organised in partnership with Coventry City Council's "Healthy Walks" Scheme, and everybody is welcome to come along. See more here. Buses : No 3 leaves Trinity Street Stop AA at 11:40am and arrives Fenside Avenue 11:57am. Walk under the A46 from there. This is purely a field walk and I am sure you will be glad to learn that there are no stiles as all the field boundaries are crossed by means of gates. We meet at the Oak at Baginton at 12:00 noon.

The Oak
Baginton is the site of an old oak tree which is often called the Baginton oak. It is about 300 – 350 years old and is thought to be one of the oldest trees in Warwickshire. The public house is called The Oak after the tree.

At 12.30pm we set off through the back lanes of Baginton. We walk along Church Road and pass the little church of St John.

Then we pass the site of Baginton Castle, now heavily protected by a metal fence. Are they worried that it might escape?

The ruin that can be seen is of a late fourteenth-century house, but it is not well known due to its location in an area of woodland on private land. If Baginton Castle did exist here prior to this house, there is no sign of its ruins.

The area was fenced off in 2006, and now the ruins and former Fish Ponds can be viewed by arrangement with the local farmer who owns the land.

At the end of the road we turn left and pass the attractive setting of Pool Cottage

Then we cross a stream before joining the banks of the River Sowe. At one point we walk around part of Finham Sewage Works. Then more fields bring us to the footbridge over the river near Stoneleigh Grange. Here we cross two river courses, associated with the mill at Mill House.

Walking into Stoneleigh Village we soon come to the charming Stoneleigh Club after about an hour's walking.

To return we have to use the same route, I am afraid there really is no viable alternative, getting back to the Baginton Oak for lunch at around 2:30pm
