This is the last of our year of wildflower walks. This time we are visiting Claybrook Marsh Nature Reserve for orchids, both the Common Spotted Orchid (Dactyorhiza Fuchsii) and the Southern Marsh Orchid (Dactyorhiza Praetermissa) , although I can't give any guarantees. Claybrooks Marsh is a nature reserve that I had not visited before and is in fact the site of Binley Colliery, which closed in 1963. It was earmarked for industrial developement until the discovery of 49 nationally and regionally scarce insects and given SSSI status. This diversity is probably the result of the poorly drained nature of the soil.

We meet at the MILLPOOL at 12 noon and at 12.30 set off along the Sowe Valley Walk, past the rugby ground. When the path turns right between the river and school we turn left to meet Princethorpe Way. Then we walk a short distance along Bruntingthorpoe Way before going right into a path. This takes us to Quorn Way, where we go left. Following Quorn Way takes us the Grange Avenue and the entrnce to the old colliery site. This is Claybrooks Marsh, which is walked in a roughly circular route, looking for orchids. It can be extended by a path through woodland alongside the A46 to a small pond, but the only practical entrance and exit is at Grange Avenue.

From the exit we cut through the Binley estate and follow the grassland that seperates Binley from Erenesford Grange, to arrive at the BINLEY PARK after about an hour. Half an hour later it is only a kilometer back to the MILLPOOL
