This month for a real treat we are walking to our nearest cider farm, the home of Vale of Welton ciders. Home Farm have been making cider in the family-run cider works known as Vale of Welton Ciders overlooking the rolling Northamptonshire hills since 2005, and we visit the nearest cider makers to Coventry on our ramble today.

Only traditional methods are used to produce Vale of Welton ciders. It's all grown, produced and bottled on site using a blend of their own cider apples. No concentrated apple juice or artificial flavouring whatsoever. They supply local pubs and shops in and around the area, as well as in neighbouring counties.

Their orchards contain over 1,000 apple trees which are idyllically sited on southeast facing hills; they slope steeply down to a valley known as the Vale of Welton.

We meet at Coventry station at 11:15am to catch the 11:46am train which arrives at Long Buckby at 12:08pm. The station here is a half mile out of town so we walk through a rough field, earmarked for development, to the OLD KINGS HEAD at 12.30. it sells Marstons EPA, Pedigree and Banks Bitter

Leaving at 1:00pm we retrace our steps along the lane before branching off through a field and under the railway. Then through successive fields we cross the M1 by Greenhill Farm. More fields follow before we reach the canal at Norton Junction on Grand Union Canal and the NEW INN alongside the A5 Watling Street after 30 minutes.

From the New Inn at 2:00pm we continue along the canal and pass the charming group at Norton Junction. Three bridges past the junction we climb a flight of steps to join a bridleway. This leads to Welton at 2:30pm where we have the delights of the WHITE HORSE, a proper old village pub and a free house (Purity and Oakhan beers on our visit).

At 3.00 we can leave the pub and visit Jim Malvern's Vale of Welton Cidery at Home Farm Stables, where we can purchase the odd bottle of cider ( Poachers, Black Jetty or Keepers )

Apple collection in the Orchard at Home Farm Stables. Next year they need apple pickers so we may arrange a whole weekend there for anyone interested!
Leaving the cider farm at 3:30pm we then follow the lane until it turns sharp right. Here a bridleway continues straight on to the marina at Welton Hythe. We cross the canal and folow the access road down to the A5. Left for a few yards then right into another track takes us over the M1 again and back to Long Buckby for the OLD KINGS HEAD at 4:30pm. Then we can return to the station for the return train at 5:06pm or even later as trains run regularly throughout the late afternoon and into the evening.
