This is an excellent hill walk, it reminds me a little of the Malverns, which might seem a little surprising as the Lickeys adjoin the southern outskirts of Birmingham. The views over south Birmingham are quite amazing.

We meet at 10:45am at Coventry station to catch the 11:02am to New Street, where we change to the 11:43am and alight at Barnt Green at 12:10pm. It is a short walk along the village high street to the VICTORIA for some Purity beers at 12:20pm.

The VICTORIA at Barnt Green, a pub that was originally built as a temperance house at the turn of the century.

Leaving the Victoria at 12:50pm we walk a semi circle through the village, re-crossing the railway, to reach the start of the Lickey Hills. We start walking uphill through an avenue of trees.

We cross a road and follow the main path as it twists through Pinfields Wood. Eventually we cross a stream and then it is straight uphill to the Visitors Centre at 1:50pm. Across the access road we take Drovers Lane past the rear of a care home (hospital). We cross the next road and follow the track until we come to a flight of steps on the right. We climb these to the top of the ridge, where we turn right to walk to the top of Rednall Hill.

Here there is a great view over the coutryside to the west. Then we descend to the OAK TREE (Marstons) for 2:35pm. Here they offer the first of our 'dishes of the day' - 'West Country Fish Lasagne'. I presume they mean Tuscany by 'West Country', as I know that lasagne trees don't thrive in the Cornish climate.

At 3:00pm we set off back up the road as far as a flight of steps leading to the top of Bilberry Hill and then to the car park for the visitors centre. Across the car park we take a path to the top of Cofton Hill, where there are great views over Birmingham. Then down to Barnt Green Lane and we walk to the BARNT GREEN INN for 4:00pm.

photo
The BARNT GREEN INN Kendal End Road, Rednal, Birmingham, B45 8PZ. This was once a residence of the local nobles, the Earls of Plymouth. Queen Victoria is reputed to have spent the night there. Records state that the house was built in 1651, however it appears to have been extensively refurbished in the early 19th century, in a Tudorbethan style.

This is a fantastic converted half-timbered manor house, with panelling retained in some areas. See what you think. Here we have our second 'dish of the day' - 'Belgian Frites'. Now, do they mean chips by this? If not, then how do Belgian frites differ from any other kind? Do they come with mayonnaise or moules?

After this, at 4:30pm we leave to catch the 5:08 or 5:38pm train back to New Street.
