This month our walk takes us to an often overlooked area of natural beauty, the Canley Ford, near Kenilworth Road in Earlsdon which we last visited on a very similar ramble in August 2006.

In 1932 Canley Ford was preserved by the purchase of 200 acres of land from Lord Leigh of Stoneleigh by the City Council. Knowing that planning regulations were very loose in those days this was the only way that the Council felt they could control development and preserve significant rural features. Canley brook crossed fields where due to the changing ground levels, natural waterfalls were formed.

In 1936, the section of the Fletchamstead Highway was commenced from Canley Road to the railway bridge at Fletchamstead and this section of the brook was re-developed, and now flows under the Highway. The area formally became a millennium green in 2000 and work to improve the wild meadows was carried out at a cost of £140,000, most of which came from a special national lottery fund. It included a new small waterfall in the ford area to replace one that was removed in 1936. Modern sculptures have also been installed here, including an 8ft steel Kestrel by Walenty Pytel. The area will now belong to the community until the year 3000.

We meet at the very popular CITY ARMS, a JD Weatherspoon's pub in the centre of Earlsdon at 12:00 noon.

At 12:30pm we set off walking along Earlsdon High Street and into Bates Road. Then we cross the golf course and walk down to the ford. It is difficult to imagine that, before the Coventry Bypass was constructed, this was the road to Canley.

The Pond
We can look at the ford, and the little pond in the field. There were cattle in the field on my latest visit, which seems a little incongruous in the midst of a city.

Then we come to the PHANTOM COACH on the A45 Fletchamstead Highway for refreshments.

The Phantom Coach
From the Phantom Coach we walk along Canley Road and over the railway at Canley Station. Right into Beechweed Avenue and over the railway bridge we go left into Hartington Crescent. Here a footpath gives access to Myrtle Grove which will lead us back to the City Arms, where some of us may choose to eat.
