This walk took place on Good Friday as the original scheduled date on the following weekend had been taken by the Coventry Beer Festival. I was at the festival for the Saturday lunchtime session! On Good Friday the buses were operating a Sunday service and hence only ran hourly, with the last return from Leamington at 6:34pm.

On 6th April we met in Trinity Street at 11:00am and caught the 11:20am to alight at the top of the Parade in Leamington Spa. Then we took the short walk down to the JUG AND JESTER.

Weatherspoon's The Jug and Jester in Leamington
It has a multiplicity of small rooms, two bars, and is on split levels. It also has a garden to the rear with a great view of Leamington parish church. With its wide range of beers it offers a surprisingly pleasant experience for a Wetherspoons. We then walk south down Clemens Street to the canal and set off for Warwick. After 20 minutes should arrive at the MOORINGS, a modernn Charles Wells pub cum restaurant cum bar. This is a very stylish new build. It sells Wells and Youngs beers with a local guest ale. Our ale can be enjoyed in the canalside terrace, but all this comes at a price !

Then we set off on the canal again. This takes us through a surprisingly rural stretch between the two towns, over the railway and River Avon and past Jephsons Farm. Then under Emscote Road to arrive at the CAPE OF GOOD HOPE on the Grand Union Canal after about an hour. This is on the opposite bank of ther canal so we have to cross using the top of the lock gates.

The Cape of Good Hope at Lower Cape, Warwick
Leaving the Cape we continue along the canal to bridge 51 where we join the Saltisford which leads into the centre of Warwick. There are four pubs along this road, the Dun Cow, the Antelope, the Kings Head and the Black Horse. On our last visit we used the KINGS HEAD, which advertised Cask Ales outside. However the Warwickshire beer was not at its best: it may pay to use the Antelope on future outings.

A short walk through town leads to the PUNCH BOWL after aniother 10 miutes. This is an old coaching inn now owned by Oakwell Brewery of Barnsley. It is very well decorated with old photographs of Warwick and sells an extremely cheap pint. It also happens to be a very good pint of Barnsley Bitter or Mild.

From here we walk to St. Nicholas Park which gives us access to the riverside path back to Leamington. We walk throught the parks in Leamington always following the river, pass the Cricketers to return to the JUG AND JESTER for the last pint
