RAR 250 Wolverhampton

header artwork

This time we travel to Wolverhampton to visit the Hail to the Ale, a relatively new micro pub that already has a big reputation. We meet at Coventry station at 10:30am to catch the 10:42am direct train to Wolverhampton. Arriving at 11:37am we make our way to the bus station. Here we catch the 5/5A bus from Stand C or the 6/6A bus from Stand J, whichever runs next, as they both pass close to the HAIL TO THE ALE on Claregate Island.

After the Hail to the Ale we make our way back to Wolverhampton Centre through pleasant leafy suburbs via the Good Beer Guide pubs on the way. First is the 30 minute walk along Codsall Road, Lowlands Avenue, Court Road and Riches Street to the NEWHAMPTON. This journey can also be done on the 5/6 bus again. The Newhampton is an excellent old suburban pub, with a wide range of beers and a bowling green. Also note the cartoon above the gents urinal!

From here it is a 15 minute walk to the ROYAL OAK on Compton Road, a Marstons (Banks) pub. Then another 15 minutes takes us to the COMBERMERE ARMS on Chapel Ash, a Grade II Listed free house. It is so small that you could walk past it and not notice (Chris and I did !).

Then we walk along Chapel Ash and under the Ring Road to the City Centre. Along Darlington Street we come to Litchfield Street for the LYCH GATE TAVERN, just up the approach to the church. This is owned by Black Country Ales.

The last pub is the POSADA, which I remember from the early days of the Campaign. It is still going, selling a range of ales in Victorian splendour. So ends the walk as we planned it, but no doubt people will have their own favourites which they wish to visit. I haven't included any times because of the frequency of trains from Wolverhampton. Through trains depart at 4:04, 4:41, 4:45, 5:41, 5:45, 6:40, 6:45pm, if you change at New Street they are much more frequent.
