RAR 248 Rugby & Lilbourne

header artwork

There are plenty of pubs in Rugby, indeed plenty of good ones, but here were have a pair of fairly unique pubs. The Head of Steam in Lilbourne is a private house that the owner turned into a pub recently, whilst the Rugby Tap Room is a micro pub next door to an off license. Because Lilbourne is so isolated - it is served by the Lilbourne Community Minibus on a Wednesday and Friday only - we have to walk there, then catch the No 9 bus back from the nearest point to Lilbourne it reaches, that is Clifton on Dunsmore. As I have chosen the most direct route, much of this is road walking.

We meet at Coventry station at 11.00 and catch the 11.11 train. Arriving at Rugby at 11.22 we set off, walking north along Mill Road. At the T junction we cary straight on along a tarred path and cross the River Avon. Next we cross a tributary stream and round a pool, passing Mill Cottages before going under the canal through a tunnel. From the tunnel we turn right and go under an old railway line. Here we are passing Brownsover on the left, but you can hardly see a house through the greenery. We walk through water meadows and recross the Avon. We are so far upstream here that the Avon is hardly any bigger than the Sherbourne ! We now walk up Station Road to Clifton on Dunsmore where we come to the BULL shortly after 12.00.

Leaving at 12.30 we now follow Lilbourne Road. At the A5 it is best to cross slightly to the right to put a safe distance between ourselves and the brow of Dunsmore Hill on the left. Then we follow Rugby Road into Lilbourne. We pass Olde Bell House, the old village pub and turn left along Chapel Lane to reach the HEAD OF STEAM after about an hours walk, so at 1.30. This was recently converted from a fairly ordinary country cottage into a pub by its owner. I can't think of such a small building becoming a pub since the days of Beerhouses. During the twentieth century new pubs were always either new builds, or converted minor country houses or farms to provide the space and grandeur expected of ' reformed ' pubs. I can't help surmising that the Head of Steam, like micropubs, is the result of more liberal European licensing practices. Personally, I can't wait to see what has been made of the interior !

We should spend a while there, taking it all in, before setting off at 2.20 along the lanes again back to Clifton and the BULL at 3.20.

From the Bull we should catch the No 9 bus at 3.48. The 9 leaves at 3.48, 4.32 and the last bus at 6.13. It takes us into the centre of Rugby and we can walk through to the RUGBY TAP ROOM, a new micropub in the heart of town. This is next door to the Rugby Tap off license, so you can select your drinks from the offie if you wish. Then it is a bit of a walk back to the station. Return trains leave at 5.29, 5.49, 5.58, 6.02, 6.29, 6.49, 6.58, 7.02, 7.29, 7.49 etc
