RAR 244 Wilmcote to Edstone

header artwork

We are now starting the last season of the canals in the Warwickshire Ring. In a couple of months we will have walked every inch of canal and deserted canal, and visited every canalside pub, in the county. This is another walk through superb South Warwickshire scenery.

The cost of return fare is £ 12, with an old gits pass you only have to pay £ 4.80 for the journey between Earlswood and Wilmcote. If you keep your eyes open during the journey you will see when we pass beneath the Edstone Aqueduct, and then when the loop line from Leamington joins as we approach Wilmcote. After leaving the station we turn left and pass Mary Arden's House, an imposing timber framed farmhouse now owned by the Shakespeare Trust, as Mary Arden was William Shakespeare's mother. We reach The MARY ARDEN, an imposing building at the village cross roads, at 12.20.

We leave at 12.50 and walk up the village street a little and follow the footpath waymarked on the right, along a path that follows the edge of the land belonging to Mary Arden's House. We pass a pigsty with Tudor pigs and enter fields. Through subsequent fields we skirt Nells Hill and emerge onto the road to Newnham. We follow this to a T junction where we turn right to pass under the impressive Edstone Aqueduct after 45 minutes walking.

Here we climb the flight of steps up to the canal. We follow the canal as it winds through the countryside back to Wilmcote, which we reach after another 45 minutes walking. Here we can try the delights of the PLOUGH, as well as the MARY ARDEN again before catching a train home again.
