Here is what we think is the only comprehensive record of pubs and beerhouses within the Coventry city boundaries going back as far as available records allow. This is an ongoing project so contributions, corrections or additions to this archive, especially anecdotes, photos and media are most welcome. Feel free to contact us for a pint and a chat anytime.

This was formerly a far more common name than it is today and was already in use in the fourteenth century. Vines do grow quite readily in England and can be trained to cover buildings.

The JUNCTION ARMS, Junction Street pub name changed when Junction Street became Vine Street in 1879, it closed shortly afterwards and became a private dwelling. Meanwhile, the Landlord Henry Francis moved, as did the name of the pub, to a new pub at No.8 Cross Street in 1881

It had an on-beerhouse license from 1896 to 1913

From 1924 to 1932 it is listed as just the 'VINE INN'. the pub continued to trade as the VINE COTTAGE until c1940.

This list obviously needs sorting through, watch this space

Dict PN This was foremerly far more common as a pub name than it is today, though it is still well represented. It is sometimes a heraldic reference to the Worshipful Company of Distillers ( 1638 ) whose arms show a vine bearing grapes, but the sign was already in use by the fourteenth century. Vines do in fact grow quite readily in England and can be trained to cover buildings.

The premises moved from Vine Street to Cross Street. it was formerly the JUNCTION ARMS
