1835 BEERHOUSE

This pub stood on the corner of Butts Lane and Hope Street. The name probably comes from the surrounding buildings 'Union Place' as shown on the 1888 map above.

This name often refers to a political union. Possible unions are that of 1707 which united England and Scotland, or of 1536 uniting England and Wales or possibly the marriage of Elizabeth of York with Henry VII uniting the houses of York and Lancaster.

In 1835 and 1841 this is the BEERHOUSE, Butts Lane. The pub closed on 11th February 1965.

Dict PN This is often a reference to a political union, such as the Act of Union, 1797, which decreed that England and Scotland should be one kingdom with one parliament. An earlier Act of 1536 had incorporated Wales with England, and in 1800 an Act united Great Britain with Ireland, though that union ended in 1922. Also the marriage of Elizabeth of York to Henry VII united the House of York and Lancaster.
