Here is what we think is the only comprehensive record of pubs and beerhouses within the Coventry city boundaries going back as far as available records allow. This is an ongoing project so contributions, corrections or additions to this archive, especially anecdotes, photos and media are most welcome. Feel free to contact us for a pint and a chat anytime.

The Thistle

City Arcade 1962

NAME THISTLE
ADDRESS CITY ARCADE
ALTERNATIVE ADDRESSES MARKET WAY

The thistle is a heraldic emblem of Scotland, adopted by James III.

This pub opened on 6th March 1962 and was a single shop unit. Its shop window frontage was obscured by a typically ugly concrete stairway. In 1985 it was 'a modern city centre pub hidden behind a set of stairs. Upstairs lounge and downstai rs bar with games room. Quiet'. Perhaps because it was so quiet it closed in 1991and became a shop.
