Here is what we think is the only comprehensive record of pubs and beerhouses within the Coventry city boundaries going back as far as available records allow. This is an ongoing project so contributions, corrections or additions to this archive, especially anecdotes, photos and media are most welcome. Feel free to contact us for a pint and a chat anytime.

The Queens Arms

photo
NAME QUEENS ARMS
ADDRESS 60 SPON STREET

This could refer to a number of queens, Elizabeth I, Victoria or Anne being the usual candidates.

The earliest known reference to this pub is in a document of 1840. In 1906 it was advertising NBC beers but in 1911 the license was surrendered for an off-beerhouse license somewhere else in the city. It closed on 30th September 1911. The premises became the Coventry Hat and Hosiery Company.

12.6.1840 JA34 CS Mention of Queens Arms in Spon Street

Spon p48 The first reference I found to the Queens Arms pub at No 60 was an 1840 transfer of license reference giving the register of licensees - the eventual closure date was 30th September 1911. After its days as a pub it first changed to the Coventry Hat & Hosiery Co.
