Here is what we think is the only comprehensive record of pubs and beerhouses within the Coventry city boundaries going back as far as available records allow. This is an ongoing project so contributions, corrections or additions to this archive, especially anecdotes, photos and media are most welcome. Feel free to contact us for a pint and a chat anytime.

The Old Half Moon

photo

Hertford Street 1910

NAME OLD HALF MOON
ALTERNATIVE NAMES HALF MOON
ADDRESS 27 & 23 HERTFORD STREET
ALTERNATIVE ADDRESSES HERTFORD PLACE

I can only imagine that this sign was used because it was an easily recognised symbol.

In 1874 and 1879 it was called the HALF MOON, Hertford Place.

In 1930 the license was surrendered for a new off-beerhouse, the Godiva Stores in Three Spires Avenue. Could this have become the Three Spires Hotel?

Known Licensees are;
1868 Richard Allen
1874 J. Feltham
1879 Mrs. Maria Feltham
1886 Charles Stafford
1890 - 1894 F. W. Asbury
1896 John Asbury junior
1903 Mrs. A. Asbury
1905 - 1913 William Judd
1919 - 1929 Walter Judd
