The proximity to local factories probably meant that a lot of the customers were mechanics. Or was the first licensee perhaps a mechanic?

In 1850-1851 this was the FOUNTAIN. The Coventry Standard of 6th September 1850 reports that F. J. Wood moved from the Plough in Spon Street to the Mechanics Arms. It closed on 7th May 1912.

6.9.1850 JA16 CS F. J. Ward moved from the Plough, Spon Street to the Mechanics Arms.

1868 - 1912 Spon P73 No 30 was yet another pub. The first reference I found was the 1851 Board of Health map and its name was the FOUNTAIN, but by 1868 it had been renamed. The Mechanic's Arms which was more in keeping with the engineering factories that were springing up all along Spon Strreet. It finally closed in May 1912.
