This is a rather commonplace rural sign.

In 1756 four soldiers were billeted here. In 1921 - 1922 the pub was advertising Peter Walker and Co's Burton Ales. The pub closed and was demolished to make room for the London road section of the Ring Road in 1962. The licensee given for 1879 to 1881 is Peter Walker & Co, the Burton brewers.
