Here is what we think is the only comprehensive record of pubs and beerhouses within the Coventry city boundaries going back as far as available records allow. This is an ongoing project so contributions, corrections or additions to this archive, especially anecdotes, photos and media are most welcome. Feel free to contact us for a pint and a chat anytime.

The Hastings Tavern

Coventry-The Hastings
NAME HASTINGS TAVERN
ADDRESS 30 CLAY LANE
Presumably this refers to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The pub opened on 19th April 1924.

In 1983 Chris Arnott said that 'Mitchells and Butler rarely miss a trick. When a pub called the Hastings was ripe for revamping, they produced a 'Battle Theme' lounge, complete with Norman arches, a mock porcullis, crossed swords and axes, and the odd Bayeux Tapestry or two'. The pub doesn't date from then!
Known Licensees are;
1926 - 1929 S. Varley
1931 - 1938 G. N. White
1939 - 1940 F. E. Oxborrow
1955 - 1957 William Ryder
1983 John Herbert (see also Summerland Tavern, Coobe Abbey Inn)
