In Greek legend the Golden Fleece was sought by the Argonauts. It was the fleece of a ram hung on a tree. The story may refer to a method of collecting particles of gold being washed down by rivers and streams by stretching sheepskins across the water. The Knights of the Golden Fleece was a chivalric order founded in 1629 for the protection of the church. The Order's badge is a ram with a red band around its middle, which is often used to illustrate the Golden Fleece inn sign.

To 1820 see the FLEECE. In 1781 the Fleece in Bell Green is to let yet in 1801 it is the Golden Fleece that is to let. In 1845 it was listed as the Beerhouse, Courthouse Green.

The Golden Fleece closed c1994 and has been replaced by a housing estate.
