Here is what we think is the only comprehensive record of pubs and beerhouses within the Coventry city boundaries going back as far as available records allow. This is an ongoing project so contributions, corrections or additions to this archive, especially anecdotes, photos and media are most welcome. Feel free to contact us for a pint and a chat anytime.

Beerhouse

ADDRESS HIGH STREET, NEWTOWN
ALTERNATIVE ADDRESSES HILLFIELDS

In the 1841 census Daniel Gilbert, 30, is a weaver in Paynes Lane but by 1851 there is no matching record.

Daniel Gilbert was the landlord of the Half Moon, Yardley Street, from 1868 to 1871. This seems a possibilty for this Beerhouse., but in 1850 the landlord of the Beerhouse, 61 Yardley Street, is given as Christopher Warner.

Known Licensees are;
1850 Daniel Gilbert
