This pub dates from at least 1774. It was a home-brew pub for many years with the known brewers being in 1841 William Bowley and in 1896 Thomas Burns. In 1878 Phillips & Marriott leased it for 21 years. Yet in 1897 it was occupied by William Ratliff and two years later Phillips & Marriott's lease expired. In 1906 the police opposed the renewal of its license and in a 1907 photograph the pub is advertising Thornley's ales. In 1931 it was closed on the payment of compensation.
