Here is what we think is the only comprehensive record of pubs and beerhouses within the Coventry city boundaries going back as far as available records allow. This is an ongoing project so contributions, corrections or additions to this archive, especially anecdotes, photos and media are most welcome. Feel free to contact us for a pint and a chat anytime.

Gosford Street 1924

NAME ANCHORSMITH TAVERN
ALTERNATIVE NAMES INN
ADDRESS 69 GOSFORD STREET
All I can say is, it seems an odd occupational name for such an inland city. In 1903 it was leased by Phillips and Marriott for 21 years for £100 per anum from James Warden of Walsgrave-on-Sowe. It was a home-brew pub at the time as malt was supplied at the usual terms as for other tenants and the tenant was to brew half of his ale. A bushel produced 3 barrels of ale. In 1907 the pub was closed and compensation paid to the owner.
