CIDER

We have no records of cider houses in Coventry, although the pub name ' The Apple Tree ' may indicate a specialisation in cider. Certainly Warwickshire was known for its cider in earlier times when Southam cider was renown in London. Today cider is made on a cottage scale in south Warwickshire; the village of Brailes has a communal press much in demand at cider making time; whilst many farms and cottages make small amounts of cider which may be purchased on occasion. Hogans cider has its headquarters at Haselor near Alcester, although their cider is actually made at Castlemorton in Worcestershire. Hogans cider can be found in shops and pubs over a wide area.

UPDATE TO 2012 REPORT

The nearest commercial cider farm to us is Vale of Welton cider just over the county border at Home Farm Stables in the village of Welton in Northamptonshire. Their ciders can sometimes be found in the pubs, clubs and shops of Coventry. Although they have only been producing for six years, John Malvern at Vale of Welton now has 1000 trees in a 20 acre orchard and will produce 7000 litres of cider this year.
